Renault Twingo Review

The Renault Twingo is a smart little car that navigates the urban jungle with ease. It offers a supple ride, impeccable road manners and enough room for four adults. On the downside the Renault Twingo lacks the ultra modern styling of some rivals.

Renault Twingo Car Review Summary
Although a certain je ne sais quoi may be missing for the fashionistas, the Renault Twingo is a cheeky looking car – especially the GT with its neat silver detailing, smart 15-inch alloy wheels and tinted rear windows.
Renault sums up the character of the Twingo in three words – feisty, practical and connected – so it doesn’t take an ace detective to work out the French firm is aiming the car squarely at the the young and the young at heart.
The Twingo comes with three 1.2-litre petrol engine options and a 131bhp 1.6-litre unit. The entry-level version has 59bhp. The 74bhp engine has more punch, but GT models have a version featuring a turbocharger to boost power to 99bhp which is impressively flexible, even at low revs.
Four models are available – the entry-level Extreme, followed by the Dynamique, GT and Renaultsport.

The Renault Twingo is user-friendly and easy to park. It is small but cleverly packaged with lots of space up front. The two rear seats are cleverly designed to individually slide, fold and recline. Thus the choice is yours whether to increase luggage room or rear passenger space. The rear seats can also be folded and tumbled forward to allow larger items to be loaded.
A comfortable driving position is relatively easy to obtain despite height-only steering wheel adjustment and a driver’s seat that’s high even at its lowest setting. All-round visibility is good while the dashboard is well set out and easy to use. However, the central digital display is an acquired taste and the stereo buttons are a touch small.
The Twingo is cheaper than equivalent mainstream superminis, but it’s not generously equipped and doesn’t undercut Renault’s more accomplished Clio by a huge margin. What it does offer are frugal engines and low carbon dioxide emissions.
The Twingo feels built to last with good quality hard-wearing materials used in the cabin.

Life Style
The Reanult Twingo would make a great first car for someone who has just passed their test. Its nippy easy-to-drive nature is equally at home around town or taking on twisting country lanes. It rides particularly well with even the firmer suspension of GT and Renaultsport models providing a supple drive.
The Twingo offers a fairly low centre of gravity and stiff suspension so the handling and steering are extremely sharp. The downside of this is that bumps are felt in the cabin.
The interior is nicely styled without ever being a trend-setter. The grey dashboard and centre console inspire a neutral reaction although the rev counter stuck on to the steering wheel column will spark a like-it or loathe-it response.
The Renault Twingo’s cabin is a fairly quiet place to spend time compared with some city car rivals. Wind and road noise are well controlled even at speed. The engines are vocal when worked hard, but they don’t become too intrusive. As far as the environment is concerned the Twingo’s carbon dioxide emissions are not going to scare the green brigade.

Security and Safety
The Renault Twingo benefits from the usual deterrents to car thieves with remote central locking and deadlocks are fitted as standard.
The Renault Twingo comes with front and side airbags as standard, but curtain airbags are a cost option on all models. Stability control is standard on top spec cars but isn’t available as an option on the rest of the line up. There are ISOFIX child seat fixings for the rear seats and the front passenger seat.

The Finishing Touches
The Renault Twingo is not as well kitted out as some rivals. The entry-level Extreme model offers a radio/CD player and front foglights. Dynamique models add alloy wheels, remote stereo controls and electric front windows. GT and Renaultsport models get air conditioning or electric door mirrors as well as sports suspension plus automatic lights and wipers.
